Chair Caning Workshop

July 12, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

See registration form for details

An old chair is something to be cherished and if it has its original seat you’re fortunate. Finding an old chair with a well-used or missing seat doesn’t mean the chair should be disposed of. To cane a chair seat is not hard, it’s not a lost art, just consider it a challenge and allow me to share my skill and knowledge of caning with you. Now is the time to get those chairs from your attic or barn and breathe new life into them.

This is where you can learn the basic seven steps of caning. The method of weaving cane on a seat that has holes around the edge shouldn’t be confused with pre-woven or pressed cane. It’s a unique process that takes nothing more than time and patience. With my assistance you can finish this process and have an heirloom piece to add to your home.

Chairs must be stained, finished or painted before class and cannot have loose joints or broken sections where the holes are located. I need to see the chair either in person or a good photo to determine the cane size for your particular chair. Only the seat of the chair will be woven during class.

If you don’t have a chair, we have handcrafted hardwood footstools that have been made for this purpose which can be completed in one day.

Have a canoe? Do the seats need new cane? You can bring that as your class project.

Workshop fees are as follows:

  • Friday and Saturday – bring your own chair and cane the seat – $250.
  • Friday or Saturday – learn the basic seven steps on one of our finely crafted footstools – $150.
  • Friday or Saturday – bring your own canoe seat and cane the seat – $100.

All prices include materials needed to complete your project and the use of my tools.

A 50% deposit is required to reserve your place in class. All checks should be made payable to Jean Reed and mailed to 685 Murray Hill Road, Hill, NH 03243.

Remaining fees are due on the day of class. Students are urged to be on time for class and stay until the end to insure the quality of their project. Brown bag lunches are recommended. Coffee, tea and soft drinks will be available.

Friday and/or Saturday, July 12 and/or 13, 2019 – 8:30 – 5:00 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch break
